Finding the perfect location for family photos can feel overwhelming—especially in a place as beautiful as South Haven. With miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, scenic beaches, peaceful parks, and beautiful dune landscapes, there are so many options to choose from.
Families often wonder which beaches have the best dune grass, where to see the iconic South Haven lighthouse, or which spots are easiest for young children or those with mobility needs. This guide highlights a few of my favorite locations and what makes each one special.
South Beach – A Favorite for South Haven Beach Photos
South Beach is one of the most popular locations for family photos in South Haven. This stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline offers a beautiful mix of scenery in one place, including sandy beach, rolling dunes, dune grass, and views of the iconic South Haven lighthouse.
The beach also has several amenities nearby, including wheelchair access, a playground, and concession stands near the pier. For photography sessions, though, I typically start at the Van Buren Street Overlook & Beach Access. From there, we take a short walk along the shoreline for photos, which gives us more space and quieter areas away from the busiest parts of the beach.
One of the biggest advantages of South Beach is simply how much room there is. Even during the busy summer months, it’s usually possible to walk a little further down the shoreline and find a more peaceful stretch of beach.
South Beach is also one of the few locations in South Haven that offers pockets of shade near the dunes and trees. This can be especially helpful for families with very young children who may not be able to stay out until sunset. It’s also a great option for morning sessions, when the light is soft and the beach is still quiet.
With its variety of scenery and classic Lake Michigan views, South Beach remains one of the most versatile locations for family photos in South Haven.
North Beach – A Great Option for Accessible Beach Photos
North Beach is my top recommendation for families looking for handicap-accessible beach access in South Haven. This location includes two transfer stations that make it easier for individuals with mobility challenges or wheelchairs to reach the sand.
In addition to its accessibility features, North Beach has playgrounds and concession stands nearby. This makes it a great choice for families who want a more relaxed, lifestyle-style session where kids can explore, play, and enjoy the beach between photos.
The shoreline here is wide and open, providing plenty of space for photos along Lake Michigan. One thing to keep in mind is that North Beach doesn’t have shaded areas along the beach itself, which means it’s not always the best fit for families with very young children who may need to finish earlier in the evening.
For families who prioritize accessibility and convenience, North Beach is one of the easiest and most comfortable places to plan a beach photo session in South Haven.
Packard Park – A Smaller Beach with Great Variety
Packard Park is a great option for families who want a mix of shaded park space and beach access. The park area itself is fully shaded by trees, which can make it a comfortable choice for families with younger children who may not make it all the way to sunset.
Bathrooms are conveniently located within the park, and the surrounding dunes include small patches of dune grass that add natural texture to photos. The beach also slopes gently toward the water, making it an easy place for little ones to walk and explore.
From certain angles, you can even capture the South Haven lighthouse in the distance, which adds a subtle local landmark to your photos.
Because Packard Park is a smaller beach, space can be a bit more limited during busy summer evenings. At times, that means your session may feel a little more visible to nearby beachgoers, and capturing wide, completely private beach views can be more challenging.
Still, the combination of shade, park access, and nearby beach scenery makes Packard Park a comfortable and flexible option for family photos.
Casco Township Nature Preserve – A Quiet Nature Location
For families who prefer a more peaceful, nature-focused setting, Casco Township Nature Preserve is a beautiful alternative to the beaches.
Located about a 10-minute drive from downtown South Haven, this preserve offers wooded walking paths, open meadow areas, and quiet water views. The variety of landscapes makes it easy to capture several different looks during one session—from shaded forest backdrops to soft, open fields.
Because the preserve is less visited than the main South Haven beaches, it’s usually easy to move around without worrying about crowds or other visitors in the background. Many families love how calm and relaxed the setting feels compared to the busier shoreline locations.
With its mix of woods, fields, and natural water views, Casco Township Nature Preserve offers a peaceful setting for families who want something a little different from the beach.
Choosing the Best Location for Your Family Photos
Every family is a little different, and the best location for your session often depends on what kind of experience you’re hoping for.
